Diagnosis of faucet leaks
Leakage from the outlet
This is where faucet leaks are most obvious and visible. The faucet starts dripping or running even when the handles are turned off. You may notice that the faucet handle needs to be turned a little tighter each time you turn the faucet off. Or, after using the faucet, you may need to readjust the handle.
These are the most common faucet leaks, and a little drip gets worse over time and eventually adds up on your water bill. This constant drip-drip-drip can also start to stain your sink if it’s not fixed.
Leaks at the base of the faucet
A leak at the base of the faucet, which is where the body of the faucet meets the sink, isn’t quite as obvious since users are constantly splashing water over the sink and the base of the faucet. However, if you frequently see puddles of water on the sink around the faucets, you may have a leak in that area. In these cases, the leak only occurs when the faucet is turned on.
To check for this type of leak, first dry off all the standing water on the sink. Then, turn on the water (both handles if it’s a two-handle sink) and carefully look for water seeping around the base of the faucet.
Leaks under the sink
A leak under the faucet and sink can be the hardest to notice. Most people don’t even look under the sink on a regular basis. However, this can be one of the most damaging leaks, as the water has nowhere else to go but onto the floor. If this type of leak goes undetected, it can damage the floor or your vanity or seep through the floor where it can cause very expensive damage.
Start by draining the sink base cabinet and drying everything thoroughly. Then run some water to see where the leak is coming from. Here are two likely sources of leaks under the sink:
- Water supply connections that are loose
- Drain or trap connections that are loose
These leaks can be very small. If you can’t see the source of the leak right away, place some dry paper towels on the floor or underside of the sink and check for water spots on the paper towels after a day or so. The water supply lines have three connections you should check:
where the supply pipes connect to the shutoff valves;
where the valves connect to the flexible supply hoses;
and where those supply hoses connect to the end pieces of the faucet itself. Any of these locations could be where water is leaking.
